(استغفر) – istaghfara, verb, present (يستغفر) yastaghfaru

  1. wa ya_ qawmi_ istaghfiru_ rabbakum thumma tu_bu_ ilayhi
    (وَيَا قَوْمِ اسْتَغْفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُواْ إِلَيْهِ);
    “Oh my people! Seek forgiveness from your Lord and repent to him…” – Quran 11:52
  2. wa bi ‘l-asHari hum yastaghfirun…
    (وَبِالْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ);
    “and in the late nights they pray (for forgiveness)”


The word istighfara comes from the root (غ ف ر) which means to cover. Because of this a helmet is called a mighfar (مغفر). Some said that root meaning of is taken from the name of a plant called al-ghifr (الغِفـْر). This plant was used medicinally to heal wounds, and so someone that seeks istighfa_r (استغفار) is seeking to heal the wounds caused by his sins.
