  1. qul u_Hiya ilayya annahu ‘stama’ nafarun min ‘l-jinni fa qa_lu_ inna_ sami’na_ qur’a_nan ‘ajaban
    (قُلْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّهُ اسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ فَقَالُوا إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْآناً عَجَباً);
    “Say: It was revealed to me that a group of Jinn listened and said ‘We have heard an amazing recitation” – Quran 72:1
  2. wa idha_ quri’a ‘l-qur’a_nu fastami’u_ lahu wa anSitu_ l’allakum turHamun.
    (وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُواْ لَهُ وَأَنصِتُواْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ)
    “…and when the Quran is recited then listen to it and stay quiet so perhaps you will gain mercy.” – Quran 7:204

    (وَأَنَا اخْتَرْتُكَ فَاسْتَمِعْ لِمَا يُوحَى);

Etymology/notes

From the root (س م ع) meaning to hear. Examples 2 & 3 use the command form of the verb, ordering someone “to listen”.
